Sports Premium
What is the PE and Sports Premium Grant?
The Education Funding Agency currently provides additional funding to each school to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport - is ring-fenced for provision of PE and sport. Funding for schools is based on the number of primary-aged pupils (between the ages of 5 and 11), as recorded in the annual schools census each year.
PE and sport play a very important part in the life of our school and all our children receive PE and swimming every year in our curriculum. We believe that physical education and sport contribute to the holistic development of children and through participation in sport and physical education they can learn more about key values such as teamwork, fair play and respect for themselves and others. Our PE and sports leader is Mr Kennedy Byrne who can be reached using our school number 01243 512399
Using the PE and Sport Premium at Birdham CE Primary School
Over the last few years, we have spent a substantial amount of the money to employ outstanding specialist PE Coaches to provide our teachers with Continued Professional Development (CPD). The specialist coach team teaches with the class teacher to develop their knowledge and confidence in different areas of PE and sport, thus giving the teacher more confidence and skills in that given area. This has promoted sustainability as the skills and knowledge learnt will continue to have an impact on future cohorts.
We have also enabled every child to participate in our ECO curriculum, which promotes a healthy lifestyle, e.g. our annual Triathlon. Our ECO culture encourages and inspires individuals of all ages to develop healthy lifestyles through positive outdoor experiences. Our Green Flag awards have demonstrated a very positive impact on the resilience and collaboration of our children.
As a school, we have also developed our provision and increased opportunities for children to participate in sports and sports related activities. This includes improving the range of extra-curricular clubs which are available and also increasing our involvement in competitive sporting events with other local schools. The overall impact of this strategy is that a greater number of children have become involved in PE and sports, developing not only sporting skills but also their minds and social skills making children more ready to learn in the classroom.
We have used this funding to:
- hire specialist PE teachers and qualified sports coaches to provide quality CPD for our teachers
- support and engage the least active children in new or additional clubs
- pay for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
- provide cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
- run competitive and friendly sport competitions, and increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
- organise and plan our Birdham Triathlon
- pool the additional funding with that of other local schools for inter school events, e.g. rugby, hockey and football tournaments
We write our Sports Premium Plan every autumn term, and update as needed throughout the year.
