Physical Education at Birdham CE Primary School

During Key Stage 1 pupils build on their natural enthusiasm for movement, using it to explore and learn about their world. They start to work and play with other pupils in pairs and small groups. By watching, listening and experimenting, they develop their skills in movement and coordination, and enjoy expressing and testing themselves in a variety of situations.

IMG_1420.JPGDuring Key Stage 2 pupils enjoy being active and using their creativity and imagination in physical activity. They learn new skills, find out how to use them in different ways, and link them to make actions, phrases and sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They develop an understanding of how to succeed in different activities and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

As a school awarded Enhanced Healthy School Status, in addition to our normal PE timetable, we also ensure that all our children have at least twice weekly access to our solar-panel heated swimming pool from May to October.  With a cover, it can be used even when raining.

Swimming Pool Also, every summer, the Y5/6 children participate in our now annual Birdham Triathlon, a competitive event with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals to win for the fastest 3-child teams who must swim 200m, cycle 2km and then run 800m.  Finally, we hold our family-friendly sports day, where cooperation and sportsmanship are the priority to see which House can collect the Team prize.
